Chapter Twelve

Niko edged his Acura through the gates of the Robinson estate to see Ricky, Lesley and Mitch waiting for him on the front steps. Lesley was wearing running clothes: snug Spandex shorts and a matching top with a pair of running shoes covered in shades of neon pink, purple and green. Her hair was pulled back high into a girlish ponytail. Sunglasses covered her eyes.

He’d seen various versions of her—the business attire, the more casual weekend look she’d worn to the park and now this athletic persona.

Niko parked behind Mitch’s Explorer, and when he got out, Ricky raced over, grabbed his hand and led him back to the group.

“Good morning,” he said to Lesley and Mitch, who returned the greeting. Niko looked at Ricky. “Ready to do some fishing, buddy?”

“Ready!”

Lesley smiled. “He’s been ready since last night. I’m surprised he got any sleep at all.”

“I slept,” Ricky assured her. “I’m ready.”

“Let’s go then,” Mitch said. He took his keys from his pocket and went to the driver’s door. He opened the rear passenger door before he got in. “You’re in the back, Ricky.”

Ricky let go of Niko’s hand and got settled in the car.

Niko had been looking forward to the Sheriff’s Sun and Fun Day as well, an annual event that welcomed all school-age children from across the county. It was headquartered at the city pier, where volunteers organized fishing tournaments, a canoe race and a sand castle contest. There were prizes and games and free food. Carp’s mother was dropping him off to meet them there.

Niko was in no hurry to leave. He liked this version of Lesley. He wouldn’t mind standing here and looking at her all day. Or going for a run on the beach with her.

“Thanks for inviting him today. I think it’s good for him to be one of the guys, you know?” Lesley said.

“I agree.” Niko couldn’t think of anything else to say.

“I’m going for a run,” she said. “On the beach.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“I should tell Ricky good-bye.” She passed him and he fell into step behind her. The running shorts outlined the perfect mounds of her bottom, which were as firm and taut as the rest of her. He remembered what they felt like cupped in his hands.

Lesley kissed Ricky, reminding him to behave himself and to have a good time. She said good-bye to Mitch before she added, “Bye, Niko.”

“Bye.” He stared after her until she disappeared around the corner of the house.

He got into the passenger seat and buckled his seat belt. Mitch stared at Niko.

“What?” Niko asked.

Mitch looked pointedly in the rearview mirror. “Nothing,” he said with a grin. “Nothing at all.”

The driveway gates closed behind them and Niko automatically glanced in the side mirror. A car that had been parked on the shoulder just past the Robinson grounds fell in behind them. Normally cars weren’t parked along the road, which was a simple two-lane with no sidewalk and no parking spaces. The only vehicles he ever noticed parked outside the properties were service vehicles like those belonging to landscapers or cable companies.
